The Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company is a registered charity based in Gateshead and a National Portfolio Organisation that specialises in the provision of arts based services for people with learning difficulties. Lawnmowers is an exciting and dynamic organisation that uses the arts to promote a just and equal society. Lawnmowers, through its core member artists, all of whom have learning difficulties, research, explore and develop new ways of creating and using drama, theatre, music and dance within their own culture and beyond. The Company supports an environment where people with learning difficulties engage with the arts to help develop their ideas and determine their own futures.


We want to recruit a highly experienced and skilled Artistic Director to be responsible for delivering Lawnmowers artistic vision for our theatre work. They will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, an experienced Lawnmowers team and most importantly the core actors to develop the Theatre Ensemble, their theatre, thinking, practice and visibility in line with company objectives, Arts Council NPO Goals and Lawnmowers ethos and values. The actors want to develop a new show by 2020/21 that will be ambitious enough to tour nationally.


The successful candidate will be responsible for upholding, promoting and developing our reputation for excellence, innovation and accessibility, and our commitment to presenting work of the highest quality.  They will help to define an inspirational and distinctive artistic vision for the Ensemble. 


The role will involve:

  • Artistic Direction and Development of the Theatre Ensemble identity;

  • Strategic Leadership in line with company objectives;

  • Theatre programming, networking and touring;

  • Working with and supporting an experienced Board of Trustees.
